David Marquez & Kid (on Backgrounds) |
It's a rough time to be a comic book fan. With the ongoing disaster that is the "Decline of the American Empire," it's hard to elevate my love of comic art to center stage when matters of life and death literally dominate the public discourse all around me. Every. day.
I mean, seriously, who the frack cares about my devotion to comic art when children are getting gunned down for the umpteen millionth time in one of our schools?
Like many, I am overwhelmed by the incessant news wash of tears and fears the world over. Even a brief break from the weight of our times feels like a betrayal of the profound issues I could be/should be discussing.
As I have no answers for the moral quagmire I feel drenched in, however, I'll turn instead to the light. Like David Marquez and his cute little kid helping him draw backgrounds for the next issue of
Exiles, or the
Invincible Iron Man, or
The Defenders in that picture up there.

Look how happy that child is, how precious. The simple joy of a child creating art is something worth celebrating, if only to remind us of what is at stake in the culture wars that are robbing some of our children of their lives, a healthy environment, and their hope for the future.
I would wish to remake our world so that all our children can know joy, too.
David Marquez's art; it brings me joy.
